Overall, the 2024 Academy Awards was a subdued affair, with a return to classic fashions and minimal accessorizing.  However, that doesn’t mean that all of fashion is boring. Several attendees made their mark with memorable looks.

Read on to learn who made the best-dressed list and what the Oscars fashion trends were for men. Also, learn how they could’ve improved their looks.

A Note About Black Tie at the Oscars

Please note that my critiques come from my knowledge of traditional black tie and old-school style norms. Traditionally, the whole point of black tie, specifically for men, is to blend in to create a uniform appearance.

One would show their personality through tiny deviations from the norm — perhaps through the belly of their lapels, the unique brilliance of their shirt studs, or an heirloom pair of cufflinks.

However, nuance isn’t something you see much of at the Oscars.

Instead, many actors and other creative types intentionally don’t conform to style norms. Rather, they have a message to send through their clothing — whether it be something they’re trying to sell, their political opinion, or something else.

However, instead of adding to the elevated ambiance of a black-tie event, many end up as veritable walking billboards for their cause. Not only are they flashy, but often their clothing fits poorly and omits many of the essential elements of black tie.

Oscars Best Dressed: Riz Ahmed in Marni

Sporting formalwear with a nod to his British-Pakistani roots, I think that Riz Ahmed was one of the best-dressed men at the 2024 Oscars. He wore an elegant, not-quite-deconstructed Marni suit. The unusual color and hidden buttons and lapels combine to make this a modern, elegant choice.

There’s no denying he looks great. And I’m not the only one who thinks so. He also made Vanity Fair’s best-dressed list.

Ahmed was attending the Oscars in support of his film Nimona, which had a nomination for Best Animated Feature Film.

More Men’s Fashion at the Academy Awards 2024

Of course, Riz Ahmed wasn’t the only fashionable guy under 5’9 on the red carpet. Read on to see more of the stylish guys in Hollywood.

Kingsley Ben Adir in Classic Men’s Fashion at the Academy Awards

Barbie actor Kingsley Ben Adir is 5’7”, according to his IMDB profile. He is doing a pretty good job wearing a classic tux with the famous Gucci Horsebit loafers. The fit is ok, but not perfect. For one thing, the jacket sleeves are too long.

Also, his jacket has flap pockets. A tuxedo jacket should always have jetted pockets, as flaps are too casual for formal attire.

Horsebit loafers are too casual for black-tie, but it makes sense why Adir wore them. He is the featured ambassador in the current Gucci campaign, which just dropped in mid-March.

Cillian Murphy Wears Atelier Versace and Omega Watch

To pick up his Best Actor Oscar, Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy also opted for a classic tuxedo. He wears a Versace tux with a white, pleated shirt without studs or visible buttons, a cummerbund, and a black silk bow tie.

He opted for sleek black patent leather boots instead of the more traditional black Oxfords or court shoes (i.e. pumps).

Murphy is also sporting a major trend for the evening’s menswear. The brooch was a very popular accessory this year. Murphy’s was custom-made by Hong Kong jeweler Sauvereign.

Overall, Murphy’s did black-tie quite well this year. He has two variations from the norm — the broach and the boots — but otherwise stuck to traditional forms.

At 5’7 and 56 years old, Poor Things actor Mark Ruffalo combined two of the night’s biggest trends with his Givenchy shawl collar suit. He wore a red ceasefire pin as well as a massive brooch.

This is a perfect example of accessorizing gone wrong. It really is essential to wear a bow tie at a black tie event. Omitting one while wearing a formal shirt is unforgivable.

Additionally, the broach is way too big for a formal event. Not only that, when positioned under his lapel it’s emphasized even more.

Speaking of which, I don’t think a lapel pin really works with shawl lapels. Shawl lapels don’t have a lapel and the pin can damage their delicate silk facing. Not only that, it interrupts the graceful swoop down to the buttoning point.

However, I can understand that the actor wanted to show his political opinion. Normally, black-tie events aren’t the place for anything that could be construed as divisive, but with the Oscars being a televised event I think it’s ok here.

Lastly, three accessories on the upper chest are just too many for black tie in my opinion. I think that a white pocket square in a tv fold and the pin would’ve been more than sufficient.

Robert Downey Jr. Wears Saint Laurent With Tiffany & Co. Jewelry

Take a look at Oppenheimer actor RDJ here. The fit is definitely influenced by current trends. The jacket is oversized, with too-wide shoulders and huge lapels.

His trousers are wide and flared at the bottom.

He wears a black dress shirt with a black knotted cord around his neck. Definitely a bold choice.

I think he would’ve looked better in a more sleek tuxedo that was better proportioned to his frame. The watch and belt are nice, though.

He seemed pleased with his outfit, though. He thanked his stylist in his Oscar acceptance speech. Ms. Erica Cloud, please put that on your resume.

Ke Huy Quan Wears Giorgio Armani and a Cartier Brooch

As always, Everything Everywhere All at Once star Ke Huy Quan’s looks great.

He wore a deep red double-breasted dinner jacket in a 4×2 buttoning pattern. The jacket has welted pockets, silk-faced buttons, and black, silk-faced peak lapels.

He also incorporated the brooch trend. He wore a large Cartier brooch. He didn’t wear a pocket square, however. I think that was a good call. The broach draws so much attention that a pocket square would’ve been overkill.

Willem Dafoe Wears Prada to the Academy Awards

Thriving and moisturized, Poor Things actor Willem Dafoe stepped out in Prada at the Academy Awards. The unusual brown and black colors make this outfit quite unusual.

I think that black and brown can work together, but this isn’t it.

The black dress shirt and tie next to the brown is somewhat jarring. Also, the jacket, although having formal elements like a shawl lapel and covered buttons has flap pockets.

Additionally, the pants are way too long — much longer than full break.

While I personally think this outfit is pretty bad, Dafoe’s NYC Outfit Check video has gone viral, and he’s wearing head-to-toe Prada while running errands.

Honorable Mentions from 2024 Academy Awards

While the guys below weren’t featured in the best-dressed men of modest height list, they still deserve their flowers. They each have unique fashion perspectives and gave us something to discuss on an otherwise tepid Oscars red carpet.

Colman Domingo Looks Great in Louis Vuitton, Omega, and David Yurman

Ok, so Rustin actor Colman Domingo certainly isn’t a shorter guy. In fact, he’s 6’2” tall. His unique, refined, tailored looks during his Oscars campaign have had him on best-dressed lists all season.

Sure, he went overboard with the accessories, but he may be the only guy to pull off these sailor suits with flared pants by Louis Vuitton.Barry Keoghan Wears an Amiri Outfit to the Vanity Fair After-Party

No, this wasn’t an Oscars red carpet look. However, it is what Saltburn actor Barry Keoghan wore to the Vanity Fair After Party.

This Amiri ensemble features puddling pants, which (for some reason) continue to be a trend among the young Hollywood set. He balanced the oversized pants with a white mesh tank and a shorter jacket. Note he also has a brooch on his tweed jacket.

Ncuti Gatwa Wears a Chest Plate to the Vanity Fair After Party

Yes, traditional tuxedos ruled the Oscars red carpet, but the Vanity Fair party is always a bit looser. It’s where celebrities can have more fun with their fashion.

Barbie actor Ncuti Gatwa took advantage of this in his Cameron Hancock chest plate and Wooyoungmi pants.

There were a few unique trends that will make this year’s red carpet a memorable one. The most notable guy’s Oscars fashion trends were classic tuxedos, red pins, and brooches.

Why Were Celebrities Wearing Red Pins at the Oscars?

One thing you may notice in several looks are simple red button pins. According to ABC News, these red pins are in support of a ceasefire in the Israel-Palestine conflict.

On this list, Riz Ahmed and Mark Ruffalo opted to wear the ceasefire pins to the 2024 Academy Awards.

Why Were Men Wearing Brooches at the Academy Awards?

Brooches are an easy way to update and personalize an outfit instantly. While there are fine jewelry versions, costume jewelers also make excellent brooch accessories.

According to Vogue, men’s brooches were the biggest fashion trend at the 2024 Oscars.

Cillian Murphy, Mark Ruffalo, Ke Huy Quan, Barry Keoghan, and Rober Downey Jr. all sported brooches with their Oscars fits.

Final Thoughts on Men’s Oscars Fashion 2024

While Oscars Fashion was more subdued than in years past, a few men delivered great red-carpet moments. Several wore politically relevant accessories, such as the red ceasefire pins.

A few Academy Award winners embraced one of the season’s biggest trends by wearing brooches on their lapels. While the vast majority of looks were on the traditional side, the accessories managed to stand out.
